Nissan Repair: ignition switch, steering wheel lock, cylinder lock

Question
have a 1987 maxima---sometimes when I try to start the key won't turn I try and try but no---then all of the sudden it starts turning and I have no problem for days---then it will do it again--is there any sort of treatment to the ignition key hole or is replacement in order?--Thanks for any help

Answer
Bill,

If the steering wheel lock is not the problem then you should use a good lock lubricant and see if that works.  If it is the steering wheel lock try rotating the steering wheel while turning the key.  Lastly, you might have a key that is worn out.  Try using a newly cut key as this has worked for me in the past.  If the aforementioned does not work then replacement of the cylinder is in order.  You have to remove the wheel cover and get a lock bolt to replace the rivit that holds the cylinder lock in place.
