Nissan Repair: 95 Nissan Altima A/C problem, nissan altima, c button

Question
Hi,
I have a 95 Altima with about 170k miles. A while ago my tach started working intermittently. Recently I've been hearing a clicking noise when trying to change the venting on the control panel.

My A/C problem is that it will blow very cold for a while then it turns warm. Sometimes, usually, it will blow cold again after a while, or if I play with the switches on the heater control. (Changing the venting position or pushing the A/C button on and off.) There is no set time that the A/C will blow cold. It varies from a couple of minutes to over 20.

A local shop said that the problem shouldn't be with the compressor or charge level, but somewhere else, possibly inside the dash, based on the other problems. Based on the other responses you've given, it sounds like the problem may be with the expansion valve. Am I on the right track? Are there other possible causes? Are these related?

Not too worried about the tach, I'd like to solve the clicking noise, but the A/C is the main issue at the moment.

Thanks for your patience and help,
Andy

Answer
Andy,

The tach is probably a loose wire on the coil or a defective tach itself.  If you hook up a hand held tach to test the connection at the coil you will find out if the signal is good or not.  If it is good then the tach needs to be replaced.

It does sound like the expansion valve for the airconditioner as you have had the system pressures checked?  If not get them to throw a set of gauges on the system and you will know for sure.  The clicking noise should be a relay for the compressor and that could be cuasing the problem if the contacts are corroded.
