Nissan Repair: 1996 Altima sudden death, air intake hose, fuel pump relay

Question

1996 altima driving down road fine and just died, happend 2x couple of months apart then restarted fine both times.
Idling last night and died will not restart. Idle had been a little rough for last couple of months tach bouncing 25 rpms or so.

Today replaced, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, dist cap, rotor. Won't start, hear fuel pump humming, is getting spark. will run for 1 second make a horrible shudder and die.

There was NO oil in dist cap.

is the oil we are looking for to be seein in Cap or do you need to pull whole distributor to check for oil?

Any other thoughts on this sudden death of an otherwise reliable car.

Answer
Scott,

I would check the fuel pump relay and the alarm circuit to make sure the car is not cutting the fuel pump off.  Also, check to see that the air intake hose is not gone and developed a crack where the car is getting unmetered air.  Are there any codes set?  If so, email me back.  Remember, on the intake hose between the air meter and the throttle body if there are cracks the car will sputter and die if air leaks in unmetered.
