Nissan Repair: emissions testing, purge valve, smog check

Question
I recently had my car, a 2000 nissan quest, hooked up to an obd for a "smog check" in the state of nevada...it threw out a code P1447, which i have since learned is the evap control system purge flow monitoring code...now i am not sure what to do. I have to fix this issue in order to legalize my vehicle, but do not know where to start to fix this problem. Please help.

Answer
Laura,

If the gas cap was not loose then you have a bad purge valve.  It is not difficult to replace and if you go to your local Nissan dealership like Planet Nissan or Desert Nissan they can sell you the valve.  If it were me I would look to make sure the hoses are in good order under the van because a leaky evaporative line or fuel hose can cause a leak which will set the code too.  The canister is in the back of the van close to the gas tank and is black in color.  The valve is where the electrical wires go the the canister and it has a small diameter fuel hose connected to it.  You can clear the code by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.  But, in order to pass smog the car has to be driven three cycles to get the memory to forget you reset it.
