Nissan Repair: nissian pathfinder wont go over 2300 rpms, mass air flow sensor, mass airflow sensor

Question
I have a 2002 pathfinder and have used a personal code reader to try and diagnois the problem. The codes are P0102, P0444 and P1102. I replaced the mass air flow sensor a year and a half ago. I removed the mass air flow housing and
it still surges and won't go over 2300 rpms. Can you tell me what the P1102 code means and is it possible to repair this without having to tow to the shop?

Answer
Joan,

The P1102 says that the heater for the mass airflow sensor is defective.  That could be the relay that provides the burnoff for it or it could be the mass airflow sensor itself.  In most cases it is the mass air flow sensor.  IF the vehicle has a history of backfire it can cause the mass airflow sensor to fail.  I would replace the mass airflow sensor since the P0102 is for that.  The P0444 is the evap canister purge volume control valve.  That is on the cannister itself under the vehicle.  This is close to the gas tank.  It is plastic and black or gray in color and about the size of a small box of cereal.  There are hoses that come off of it and one that has a couple of wires that come off it and that is the valve.  I would first clear the codes and make sure the gas cap is on tight and see if that code goes away and you might not have to replace it.  If the gas cap is loose this is one of the codes that will set.  If you want to drive the truck buy a mass airflow sensor and disconnect the battery when you replace it.  Reconnect the battery and you should be good to drive.  Monitor the codes as I have stated above before you do any other work on it as all the codes will clear when you hook up the battery and you might not have to do anything else.  Be sure to check the connection on the new mass airflow sensor and make sure that it does not get wet like washing the engine or running through high water as this is a common thing that takes out a mass airflow sensor.
