Nissan Repair: Failure of Power Window of Nissan 200sx SE-R, nissan 200sx, 1998 nissan 200sx

Question
Hi,

Thank you for the quick response to my question last week. I was browsing through sites to look for a power window switch and I was just curious what I should be looking for. I assume as long as I get a 2dr Nissan drivers side (left) switch I should be ok? Does it matter what year and does it have to be a 200sx se-r or can it just be an se? I am not sure how compatible the master switches are in between different cars.

Also, do you have any recommendations for where to get the switch? I found some results on www.car-part.com but I was curious if you have any other better sites.

Thank you and have a great Thanksgiving!

I drive a 1998 Nissan 200SX SE-R. Since it is a 2-door car I only have 2 power windows. I actually have two problems. One occurred recently and the other occurred a long time ago.

The recent problem is similar to some other problems that people have been having. All of a sudden my driver side window started acting up one day. The window goes down fine but when it rolls back up it is almost like a guessing game. However, I have noticed that normally when the car is cold, the driver side window does not go up ever but when the car is warmer or the sun has been shinning of that side for awhile, the window works like nothing is wrong with it. In order to get the window up when it is cold, I stick my finger down in there and pull it up or push the window to one side (because possibly it is off its track). Sometimes I can get the window to go up the first time I try and sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes for it. I do not think the motor is dying out because I had that replaced about 1/2 a year ago.

The second problem occurs with the passenger side window which I think is much easier to figure out.  The button on the passenger side window works fine to roll it up and down but the driver side button always seems slow and lagging. I imagine is it an electrical problem?

I would appreciate any help you have with these problems. I have asked various people what they thought the problem was however nobody has actually looked at my car yet. Most think it could possibly need greasing, perhaps using lithium grease would work? By reading other posts, I'm now guessing it could be the main switch?

Thank you for everything!

Tim,

It sounds like the master switch is going out.  This is the one on the driver's side door.  Replace the switch assembly and you should be fine.  If the driver's side window is hanging up it would be the regulator that the motor activates that moves the window up and down.  Down is fine because gravity helps it.  But, on the up swing it will stick.  You could take the door apart and get inside to grease the pivot points and check the linkage.  If one of the pulley points is defective the regulator assembly will have to be replaced as the pulley is not sold individually.

Answer
Tim,

Go to rockauto.com and see if they can get you a switch for your year, make and model.  If not go to courtesynissan.com and they can get one for you.  It should be for the same year and model.  I think the 200SX and SE R are the same for the switch.
