I have a 94 nissan maxima gxe automatic, when the car is cold, especially first thing in the morning, when i crank it up and put it in gear it completely chokes out, just like a straight drive feels if you let the clutch out while it's in gear.  I have to let the car warm up at least 10 minutes, then when i put it in gear it really bogs the motor down for about another minute, then it runs fine.  Once the car is good and warm it runs and shifts perfectly.  Do you have any idea what is casuing this problem?
Thanks!!

Dan,

I would think the cold start sensor is defective and the car is not going into choke mode.  Once warm it runs fine.  The bogging is caused by the car not getting enough fuel when cold.  Other items I would check are a plugged fuel filter and the plugs to make sure that they are still good.

im sure it isnt the cold start sensor.  i was told it may be the torque convert solenoid, it acts like it's engaged when the car is cold, but i dont know how to check it.  i dont know if the solenoid is inside or outside the transmission.  have you any idea?
thanks

Answer
Dan,

If the lock up torque converter is applied while the car is at idle the car will die.  This is a clutch that locks the converter to the engine and transmission.  remember that a torque converter slips and that is what lets an automatic not have a clutch.  But, to get metter mileage the manufacturers installed the lock up portion.  If that applies while the car is at idle, while the vehicle is stopped the car will die.  now it could be doing it if the clutch is burnt almost out but I doubt it.
