Nissan Repair: 91 Pathfinder Transmission, air meter, cup of tea

Question
My 91 Pathfinder SE only has 80000 miles. It starts up fine and I can go in reverse all day, but as soon as I place the transmission in "Drive," the engine RPM goes down and it dies. A friend of mine said he had almost the same problem and had to have his transmission replaced. Any suggestions?

Answer
Ryan,

It could be the transmission.  Does the check engine light show a code?  If not I would be checking the airhose that goes from the air meter to the throttle body.  If there is a crack in the hose it will cause the engine to die too.  So, check the black hose that goes between the intake and the air meter first.  If there is a crack replace the hose.  You see, if there is crack you will get unmetered air and the engine will die.  If you are in reverse you compress the hose and the crack does not open so the engine will not die.  Check the hose first and if there is no crack take the truck to Cottman Transmissions and have them check out the transmission.  I ahve had good experiences with them.  AAMCO is not my cup of tea so you be the judge.
