Nissan Repair: 91 maxima cranks will not start, fuel pressure regulator, engine cranks

Question
my brother has a 91 maxima 3.0. he stated that while driving, the last time it ran the fuel economy was terrible like it used 1/4 tank in only about 5 miles. the car then stalled. since then i have checked and there is spark at the coil, and at the plugs. we replaced all plugs and fuel filter. engine cranks at normal speed. at times there is a popping noise in the air filter box. inside the air intake tube there was lots of oily gas type residue. I have fuel at the engine side of the fuel filter. I can spray carb cleaner into the throttle blades and it will attempt to run. Sensor? Fuel pressure regulator? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Disconnect the battery to clear the codes.  Reconnect after five minutes and attempt to start the car.  Now, there is gas in the tank?  Yes, then turn the key and check the fuel pressure.  My bet is the pressure regulator is defective since you say it used so much gas in such a small time.  But, when you say it will try to run on carb cleaner that throws me off.  The air meter has to be hooked up to the hose and the hose to the throttle body to have the car run properly or it will get unmetered air.  Be sure and email me back with your findings.
