Follow th steps on the sticker under the hood as to the process.  It will tell you what the base timing should be along with the idle speed.  Remember that you want to time the engine with the airconditioner and headlights off with the engine warmed up.  The timing marks are on the crank and if you want to get really good results, with the engine off, get down to the marks and get some white or bright colored paint and paint the appropriate line and pointer.  Then, get an inductive timing light and hook it up and start the car.  You will see the marks easy.  Loosen the distributor and adjust the timing and lock the distributor down and you are done.
