Nissan Repair: Cannot turn key, matal, steering wheel

Question
The steering wheel turns but the key will not turn on the car.  The car is in "park".  Earlier today we had to force the wheel to turn to turn on the car.  Then it worked but now it won't allow us to turn the key even though the steering wheel is turning and not locked.  This is a 1998 maxima

The theft interlock on the column has sheared off  in the ignition cylinder.  I am afraid you are going to have to take the column apart and replace the cylinder and interlock.  I would go to a wrecking yard and replace the column as an assembly.  It is a real pain to take the interlock off since it is riveted on the column and the matal around it is softer than it so you end up drilling and the drill walks into the, soft, surrounding metal.
