Nissan Repair: maybe water in the gas tank, water in my gas tank, water remover

Question
hi, i drive a 91 nissan pick up the 4cyl model. i replced my fuel filter about 8 months ago. my truck has either have had rough idleing or it sputters and tries to die when im driving. when it starts to sputter it either dies and i can start it up again or the rpms go almost to zero. a friend of mine told me that i have water in my gas tank, so i went and bought some water remover or something from the closest auto shop. i was wondering if it is water in my tank, how long does it take to get out? thanks for your time.

Answer
Kris,

I do not think it is water in the gas.  It sounds like the distributor has oil on the optical pickup.  Take the cap and rotor off and the center part and cover and look to see if there is oil on the pickup.  If there is replace the unit with a rebuilt unit.  Check it out and email me back if you have further questions.
