Nissan Repair: 96 Nissan 200SX SE (1.6L) Air Intake Issue, mass airflow sensor, nissan 200sx

Question
A while back, I installed an aftermarket cone filter. It worked fine for a bit, but then started stalling the engine, so I reinstalled the stock box.

The stock box worked for a while as well, but is again beginning to stall the engine or cut off power.

The MAF/VAF might just need to be reprogrammed, but I'm not sure. (If that is the case, I don't know how to get such a thing done.)

Thanks.

Answer
Ian,

My bet is the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAS) is going out and needs to be replaced.  That is, if the intake hose is not loose between the MAS and the throttle body or there is not a crack in the hose allowing unmetered air into the system.  You see, if the engine gets unmetered air it will make the engine stall out like you describe.  The MAS will do the same thing if it is going bad.  And, yours is known for going bad on that particular year model.
