Nissan Repair: car not starting, nissan maxima, bald spot

Question
HI,my 1995 nissan maxima is not starting...i replaced the starter about 4 months ago since then only about 3 had starts... i went to start the car up and i heard the usual starter sound then a screeching sound so i stopped and tried again but this time i heard nothing.  when i brought my friend to help me out we heard a whining sound that seemed to be little higher than the trottle body like maybe that side of the engine bay....any information will be helpful...THANKS

Answer
It sounds like the new starter has a bad bendix.  That is the part that drives out to mesh with the flexplate ring gear.  If this is not the case look into the hole where the starter mounts to see if the teeth are worn off the ring gear.  This was a problem on several year of the Maxima.  The ring gear is made of soft metal and if the starter bendix goes out the righ gear gets eaten and with a bald spot the car will not start.  If it is the ring gear you are looking at seperating the transmission from the engine to get enough access to remove the flexplate and install another one.
