Nissan Repair: squeeky belt, nissan 240sx, center bolt

Question
Hi Von,

I just changed the alternator on my Nissan 240sx....real tight operation.

Anyway, on start up the belt squeals really loud, and then after a few minutes it seems to go away.

I'm trying to figure out if the belt is too loose or too tight.  I'm not sure exactly how to tighten and loosen the tension.

Any suggestions?

Wayne

Answer
The belt is too loose.  Loosen the center bolt on the adjustment pulley and then tighten the long bolt that tightens the belt.  When you have an inch of play.  This is where you press the belt in between the pulleys you will note that it will go down an inch.  This is about right.  Remember, that if you tighten it too much you will fry the bearings in the alternator.
