Nissan Repair: RPM Spike/Gear Slip, 4wd auto, nissan pathfinder

Question
I realize it may be tough to estimate, but is there a time frame in which I need to have this fixed?

I appreciate the help!

Thanks.
Mike

Hi Von -

I own a '96 Nissan Pathfinder(4WD Auto)and as of lately when driving between 50mph - 70mph there seems to be an occasional RPM spike/gear slip (this occurs regardless of the "overdrive" option).  The spike only lasts a second or two.  I'm assuming this is an issue with my highest gear, how can I fix this and is it a major repair?

Thanks.
Mike

Sounds like the lock up torque converter is slipping.  Yes, it is a pain in the butt to take the transmission out to get the torque converter out.  And, if you are in that far it is probably a good idea to change out the bands and clutches while you have the transmission out.  Your choice.  But, with the age and the time involved with the removal of the transfer case and the transmission you will be kicking yourself in six months when a band or clutch goes out in one of the other gears.

Answer
You could get away with it for a week or a year.  I have no way of knowing since I can't look at the car and we can only communicate on-line.  Cottman transmissions is a good source for information and they will look at it for free and give you their opinion of how long it will last.
