Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Maxima rough idle, nissan maxima, air meter

Question
Von,

Hello.  I bought a 1996 Nissan Maxima and I recently had a tune up with the spark plugs, air and fuel filter replaced.  I also had the fuel pump replaced but the car feels like it wants to go when I am sitting at a light or when I am acelerating slightly.  It also does this more when I have the AC on.  It does this when I am in Drive not in Park.  It is a hard problem to describe, but the car feels like it wants to change gears or something, I also notice that my RPM's drop a bit when it does it.  Is this a fuel injector problem or coils or something with the spark plugs?  My check engine light is not on though.  This problem started about 3 weeks ago and it is getting steadly worse.  Please help.  Thank you,
-Bill

Answer
Check to see that the air meter hose that goes to the throttle body is in good condition and not cracked or torn.  If you are getting unmetered air it will cause the surge condition.  Remember that you had a tuneup and part of that is taking the hose off to get to the filter.
