Nissan Repair: smoke under hood, brake calipers, nissan maxima

Question
Please help.  My son was given a 1986 Nissan Maxima with 175000 miles. The repair shop said it needed: alternator, alt. belt, battery, cap and rotor, break light switch.  After this is would not pass inspection (in NY. They then changed the oil and filter and changed the spark plugs. Also, they removed tires and lubricated the brake calipers (they said they were locking). I was charged $1087. for the work. Car passed inspection (I was not present) My son took it out the first time that night and smoke billowed from under the hood.  So much, that neighbors thought a house was on fire.  He had driven only 3 miles.  What could be wrong? Could this problem have been missed a during repair or inspection.  Thank you so much for responding.

Answer
Check to see if there is an oil leak under the hood that is getting oil on the exhaust.  If this is not the case check to see that whatever they lubricated the brakes with did not get hot and burn off when he drove the car.  There is a remote chance that one of the assessories like the new alternator has locked up and the belt was burning.  First, start the car with the hood open, wiht safety glasses on, and look at the engine while it is running.  Turn on the headlights and airconditioner and see if there is an additional load on the engine and look under the car for a large oil leak.
