Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: O2 Sensor, checkers auto store, oldsmobile alero

Question
I have a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cylinder.  I have a bad O2 sensor.  I went to the local Checkers Auto Store and they told me I could buy a universal sensor with multiple plugs on it to fit different engines but said they don't do installation.  He said the installation was rather simple but wouldn't give me much direction as to how to install it.  Could you help me out?

Answer
Hi
Not too sure of the different plugs, never messed with one of those, but as far as the O2 sensor, it is fairly easy.
If it is the front sensor, it is located in the exhaust manifold, and should be able to be accessed from under hood. You'll need to remove the exhaust heat shield, which is held on by 3 - 10mm bolts.
It'll take a 7/8" wrench, or you can get or maybe loan an oxygen sensor socket. It is basically a socket with a slit cut in it to allow the wire to be pulled through.
If it is the rear sensor, it has to be accessed from underneath. The wire you'll need to follow it up towards engine compartment. It can be a rather long wire. Same basic procedure, same size wrench or socket.
I Hope this helps
Good luck
