Answer
Hello Joe,
If you are sure it is a ground wire, to the negative battery terminal, it is not going to be the cause of the battery going dead.
It might complete a circuit from an accessory that is on, and that accessory might be draining the battery, but a ground won't kill the battery.
Now, if it happens to be from the positive terminal, there are a number of things that connect directly to battery power...electric seat, door locks, radio memory, lights, and aftermarket sound and alarm systems, any of which could be draining the batt.

GM didn't put fusible links on ground wires, but many battery ground cables have a little pigtail to connect accessories, so I wonder if that is what happened.

If you are sure it is a ground wire, and you are sure disconnecting it stops the battery drain, then connect a 12 volt test light from that disconnected wire, to the battery neg where it was connected.
If the test light illuminates, then there is for sure something grounded by that wire drawing power. I would find the fuse block, and start removing fuses till the test light goes out.
But check for those add on systems also.
Check glove compartment lights, trunk lights, etc. to see if one of those out of sight lights may be staying on.
