Question
I appreciate your help.  I will try the crank sensor.  By the way, could you tell me where it is and what it looks like?

Thanks again

Question -
I have a 1989 Olds Cutlass Ciera SL wagon with the 3.3L engine.

I was sick for quite some time and the car sat without being run for 3 years now.  The car ran quite fine before it was parked.

The battery was quite dead and I jumped it to try and start it.  It cranked fine and sputtered a bit, almost running.  Then, nothing.  It still cranks fine - I have replaced the battery, but I am getting no spark.  Fuel delivery is good.  I get pressure and fuel delivery at the fuel rail.

I have removed the coil/ignition module assembly and the coils appear to be fine.  I cannot get the coils apart from the ignition module.  Is there any way to test the ignition module and/or computer?  The plug wires are good, I dont get spark at the coil towers.

Could I have cooked the computer and/or the ignition module by letting the battery die and then jumping it?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,Joe

Usually if you have a no spark/no start condition on a 3.3l it is caused by a failed crank sensor, its is a common item that fails on this engine and i am leaning more towards that as your cause of the no start, the ign module needs the crank sensor to sync the fireing of the spark plugs,if it sees no refrence or crank sensor data it will not fire the coils, the problem is is that when a crank sensor fails it fails,it may be fine one day and the next it will fail and cause a no start/no spark condition, based upon the condition your having i would replace the crank position sensor and recheck,if you need further help in this diag,or that didnt solve it contact me and we can do some more diag. Thanks

Answer
Hi,Joe

The Crank position sensor is located behind the crank pulley,if you look down and to the right of the crank pulley you'll be able to see the bracket and the connector with 4 wires leading from it,in order to replace the crank sensor, you need to remove the belt and remove the crank pulley, the sensor is mounted to the ft timing cover with 2 bolts, the new sensor will not come with the bracket you need to buy that seperate,i recommend you buy that, ive broken many because the bolt that locks the sensor in place usually always breaks, the tricky part is installing it,there is a special tool that lines up the sensor to the reluctor ring that is part of the crank pulley, but i have installed it without.when you get to that point let me know and ill guide you on installing it without the tool,if you can find the tool then rent or purchase it,i dont know if the local parts stores have it availible because last i heard it was a GM only tool. contact me on installing the sensor without the tool. Thanks
