I have a 1994 Oldsmobile 88 "Royale".  Recently I have had problems with the car when I accelerate after a stop or a light. Other than that it runs ok.  After I try to accelerate after a stop it shuts off completely and I can restart the car with no problems and continue on my way, but it always happens when I stop and accelerate. Can you please help me with this. It would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Reggie

Hello Reggie,
If that car has a carburetor, that is a typical symptom of the accelerator pump being worn out. A jiffy kit will fix that right up.
Look down inside the throat of the carb, with the engine OFF, and work the throttle to wide open. It should spray a good shot of gas into each throat.

If you have fuel injection, it sounds like either low fuel pressure....filter dirty....or the throttle position sensor giving false readings, which would allow a large slug of air, without the necessary fuel to go with it. Quite a lot like the accelerator pump symptom above.
Both can be tested....fuel pressure, and the TPS.

Van,
The car has actually acted different since i've last talked with you. The other day when I went on the highway and over 55-60mph, the car would deccelerate. It got to the point that I had my foot all the way down, and it was slowing going to 0mph. I had to pull over and restart the car, which was dangerous because I had the kids in the car with me. I remember changing the  fuel filter not too long ago, maybe 6 months ago I beleive. And we took the throttle sensor and got it tested and it seems to be doing fine. I too also still think it's a fuel problem, but what else could it be? I mean the fuel pump seems to be working fine. I'm quite at a loss with this one. I appreciate you taking your time out to help me with this one, Thanks

Reggie

Answer
Hi again Reggie,
OK...if you took a throttle position sensor to get it tested, it is fuel injected.
That means it requires the proper pressure.
Fuel pressure testing is probably the step that needs to be done, although it is sounding like a restricted filter, so without the tester, I would replace the filter again and see if it does the trick.
