Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Ignition switch repair, switch repair, high velocity

Question
How would I replace a ignition switch if I was to buy it and do it my self? It would be for a 1988 Cutlas cierra I lose the keys but I don't know where so Instead of just getting a new set becasue I think they were actually stolen I want to put in a new ignition.

Answer
Your 2 major problems are trying to get the 2 special tools for removing the steering wheel and depressing the LOCK PLATE underneath the steering wheel. Without these tools you will damage the steering wheel and the lock plate trying to get them off.

Also if you have an AIR BAG on the steering wheel you will need the directives on how to disable the air bag system so as the air bag does not accidentally deploy when removing it from the steering wheel of which can KILL YOU DEAD due to the high velocity of deployment should it hit you in the SIDE of the head during removal.
