Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Olds Cutlass Timing Chain, olds cutlass supreme, spark plug wires

Question
HI, I just bought an 89 Olds Cutlass Supreme w/ a 3.1 L engine. I don't know how many miles are on it. I changed plugs, wires, coil pack, checked the fuel pressure (approx 45-50 lbs, and
it still turns over but won't start/won't fire. All the fuses are ok. I assume it is the timing chain and gears. My dad replaced his on a 86 Olds 98,it had a plastic covered gear. Is there a way to know for sure that thats the problem (a way to test). About how much should I expect to pay a shop to replace a timing chain and gears?
thanks Tom

Answer
WHOA, BACK UP. Did you perform a compression test to see what the compression is on ALL the cylinders ?.

Are you getting ANY spark from ALL of the spark plug wires when you are trying to start the engine ?. Checl ALL the plug wires NOT just ONE.

IF you have NO spark at the spark plug wires your most likely cause is:

1. crankshaft sensor. (most common).

2. Ignition module.

IF you DO have spark at ALL the spark plug wires:

1. Disconnect one of the fuel injector electrical connectors and check for battery voltage using a test light at one of the 2 wires in the connector.

If you have battery voltage at the one wire, take the ground clip of the test light and attach it to the POSITIVE terminal of the battery and insert the test light probe into the OTHER wire within the electrical connector and crank the engine and the test light should flash ON and OFF. DOES IT ?.

Does the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT illuminate on the dash panel when you turn ON the ignition key ?.

Has the car EVER run since you bought it ?.

What mechanical work or ANY kind of work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made as a vacuum line may have been knocked loose or a wire connection came loose, Look around in the area where work was performed..

Let me know.
