Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Speedometer Jumping, oldsmobile cutlass supreme, oldsmobile cutlass

Question
Hi Tom,
I have a 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. 3100 Engine.
I drove on the highway for about 15 minutes today and then my speedometer started to jump around.  I would take my foot off the gas and then instead of gradually decreasing, the needle would jump as far down as 50mphs and then back up again, when I was cruising at 70mphs.  I drove for another 20 minutes before arriving at my destination.  Once, I felt as though there was a very small lurch when I slowed down and then used the accelerator again.
Can I drive to my place of work tomorrow (40 minutes on the highway) and then take the car to a GM dealership near work?
Do you know what could be causing this?
I greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Steph

Answer
IF this is an ANALOG needle style speedometer it is most likely a problem in the speedometer cable from the cluster head to the transmission or a problem with the speedometer gear in the trans.

The ONLY problem you may encounter is the speedometer may quit and the CHECK ENGINE light will come ON but just get it fixed as soon as you can.
