Help Tom Joy
I have a 1988 Olds Cutlass Cierra.  When the car is idling it will overheat even in winter.  When driving it is fine.  When the car is sitting idling and overheating, the fan does not come on nor does the overheating light on the dash board.
The fan motor was replaced and so was the thermostat.  The fan will start for a few seconds when the car is shut off.  Any ideas?  Dy
Answer -
What size engine ?.

Does the vehicle have A/C ?.

Does the radiator have ONE or TWO electric fans ?.

What mechanical work or ANY kind of work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made as a wire connection may have been left loose or came loose.

Look around in the area where work was performed.

Let me know.

The engine is a 3.8 litre.  The car does have air conditioning and the rad has one fan.  The fan motor and wiring was replaced last spring, also the oxygen sensor was replaced.  A major tune up including plugs and wires was done at the same time. As mentioned before the fan will come on for a few minutes when the car is shut off.

OK, Your most likely suspects are the TEMPERATURE SENDER SWITCH. NOT the SENSOR.

OR

The cooling fan RELAY.

Does the cooling radiator fan operate ALL the time when the A/C is ON ?.

The fan does not runn on A/C at all.  Where are the Temp. Sensor switch and the cooling fan relay?  I looked in a haynes manual and could not find either.

Answer
The fan relay is mounted in the engine compartment on the inside of the drivers side fender on a bracket along with 2 or 3 other relays. Some of these relays are IDENTICAL so you can swap them out and see if the fan start to run when you swap them from place to place.

Make sure that you have the ignition ON and the A/C set toMAX so the fan will come on immediately.
