Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: transmission tune-up, toyota camry, oil residue

Question
Hi, I have a Toyota, but the Toyota guy is maxed out, and your experience is much more impressive anyway. The 1997 Toyota Camry that I have has close to 80,000 miles, yet was taken very well care of - mostly highway.  It was my manager's, and he sold it to me at the trade in price in 2002. Anyway, it was not used much at all the past 2 1/2 years (7,000 miles). It is now my intention to put the car into everyday use, ( my and I checked the transmission fluid to see that it has now changed from red to grayish red. Toyota's suggested interval is 45,000 miles. I can remember back in my younger days ( late 60's, early 70's), that the rule of thumb was that if motor oil was never changed, leave it alone, the explanation being that the newer stuff has detergents which caused the old oil residue to break into clots and seize the engine - this actually likely happened to a college friend who changed the oil in a 60,000 mile Buick that ' never leaked a drop' (words of the original owner). Anyway, my feeling is to get the car to my Toyota dealer and have him change the fluid and filter after the holidays. Do you think my fear is real or just change it already ? Thanks for reading my long my long story and for your answer.
Happy Holidays.
Thanks, Mark.

Answer
hi mark ,thanks fo4r the compliment and the toyota guy is always maxed out lol.yes mark get the fluid changed,.and there is some truth to the myth of detergents .but you have a 90 percent chance that the trans will be fine if you change fluid and filter.however if you don,t the chance of major trans repairs raises your percentile to 100 percent guarantee ..lol change it mark. please rate my help ty billymac
