Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Transmission / Broken Axle, toyota camry, fluid leaks

Question
Hi,
The car is actually Toyota Camry but I do not believe the question to be vehicle specific. Your abilities are too good to not ask.
I think list the sequence of events will best describe the problem.
1- Car felt like something hit from bottom. And a loud metal on metal sound began from the transmission area.
2- Car would not move. Tried to push in nuetral and car was extremely difficult despite the efforts by 2 men. ( Could easily move it by myself before )
3- After tow home, car seems to roll easily.
4- Jacked up driver side of car and could see wheel moved easily in PARK, and saw that the axle had broken off from the tranmission. Jacked up passenger side and expected wheel to be locked (PARK) but wheel also moved easily although still attached to the tranmission.
Question: How can I identify if transmission is damaged or if problem is confined to a broken axle ?
Thanks, and happy holidays.
Mark.
