Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1983 Buick Skylark, buick skylark, clothes pins

Question
Last year I had the carburator rebuilt on my 1983 Buick Skylark Limited.  We never had any problems until about four months later during the hot summer.  After driving the car for sometime the car started to "load" up and backfire while driving.  My husband put clothes pins on the fuel lines to prevent vacuum lock.  This seemed to do the trick.   Now several months later the weather is cooler and every couple of weeks my car is dying when I come to a stop in traffic or slow down.  The very next day I can drive it and it drives and idles just fine.  It seems as when the car warms up it does this but only in Reverse, Drive, 1, and 2.  Everyone I know is totally stumped as to why it is behaving this way.  Can you shed some light on this?  My car has only 45000 original miles on it and I believe it is a 2.8.

Answer
hi missy, well i hate to say it but time to rebuild the carb again .and as to why it does it at these times.because your trans works on hydro pressure and each gear takes a diff amount of pressure.which means for the eng to turn the torque converter and supply the right amount of torque it has to idle higher or lower to compensate for the demand of the trans.kinda complex but is logical if you think about it.most likely the idle jets on the carb are wore out and rebuilding may not repair this prob.you may have to buy a new carb.hope this helps please rate my help so we can keep this service free ty billymac
