I have an 89 Buick Regal that had not been started in about 2 months. We drained the fuel changed the fuel filter, oil filter and oil, 3 of the spark plugs (they are hard to get to) put in fresh gas. The problem is that the car won't stay running. When  we disconnected the fuel filter it would run (very messy) but as soon as it was connected again it cut off. We replaced the fuel pump relay and every time you put the fuse back in the car cuts off. HELP!!!

hi carol. hmm i am a little confused but i will try and help.are you saying that you bypass the fuel filter ,like put a hose in between the line.the car runs but when you put filter back on it will not run. the fuel filter has a arrow on it the arrow should point away from the fuel tank.now back to the fuse.are you saying the car is running with the fuse pulled but when you put fuse back in it does not run? please send a little better explanation of this prob and i will certainly be happy to help you.please take a sec to rate my help  ty billymac
Thanks for your reply. Let me clarify; the fuel filter is in place correctly-we had the car runing and driving for 20 min, to achieve that we had to "vent" the filter, disconect the outflow side, start the car, reconnect while gas was spewing out of it and the car idled fine. This was after several attemps of the same routine. The car ran for 20 min, stalled twice at the gas station-started right up-the next problem came when after it was off for some time it would not start again. disconecting the fuel pump 20a fuse under the hood allowed the engine to run roughly, replace the fuse the engine cuts out. repeated attemps to start are futile. disconnect the fuse-engine starts roughly. plug the fuse in- it dies. haven't tried the fuel filter routine--too much gas on the ground, very bad!storm drain at the end of the driveway, not comfortable doing that again!!!! Do we have a pressure problem? sensor problem? what is the next step to take?

Answer
HI CAROL,AND TY FOR CLEARING THINGS UP.WHAT IS HAPPENING IS A FUEL PRESS REGULATOR PROB.AND YES IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO USE THE METHOD WHERE FUEL SPRAYS.THE FUEL PRESS REG HAS A SPRING IN IT ,UNTIL THE PRESSURE REACHES 45 PSI.THE SPRING WILL NOT OPEN THEREFORE LETTING THE UNUSED FUEL RETURN TO THE TANK.SO EITHER THE FUEL PRESSURE IS EXTREMELY HIGH BECAUSE THE REG IS NOT OPENING OR IT IS EXTREMELY LOW AND NOT ENOUGH PRESSURE TO OPEN.THERE IS A SCHRADER VALVE ON THE FUEL RAIL LOOKS LIKE A VALVE YOU WOULD PUT AIR IN .IF YOU GO TO AUTO STORE AND RENT OR BUY A FUEL PRESS GUAGE.IT JUST SCREWS ON THIS VALVE TURN THE KEY ON CRANK THE ENG LOOK AT THE GUAGE LESS THEN 40 PSI .REG WORKING MORE THEN REG.STUCK.TAP ON REG SEE IF PRESSURE GOES DOWN IF SO CAR WILL THEN RUN IF NOT REPLACE REGULATOR.LET ME KNOW CAROL IF NONE OF THIS WORKS ,I WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU UNTIL WE GET IT REPAIRED GOOD LUCK BILLYMAC
