Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: no fuel to injectors, olds cutlass supreme, olds cutlass

Question
Van,I have an 88 olds cutlass supreme that doesn't seem to be getting any fuel to the injectors. It will run on quick start sprayed into the throttle body but won't cotinue once you stop the spray. Is this a computor problem and if so where is it located? Thanks,Brian

Answer
Hello Brian,
First, we need to know if there indeed is no fuel getting to the injectors, or if fuel is there, and is just not getting THROUGH the injectors.
The injectors are just little solenoid valves that open by electricity, but depend on the pressurized fuel behind them in order to fuel the engine.
There is a fuel pump inside the tank that supplies the pressure, and a pressure regulator that maintains a constant pressure.
Fuses are in the system also, and are a point to check.
First thing I would do is see if I can hear the pump in the tank running. When the ignition is turned to run,(not start), the pump should run for three seconds. It is hard to hear, but if you get back there and have someone else turn the key, you should hear it.
If the pump IS running, a fuel pressure test would be next on my list, but that's a little harder.
Keep in mind, there is a filter in the line, that even if the pump is running, may prevent fuel from getting to the injectors.
The pump is operated by a relay, which is another possible problem.
All of those items, in addition to possible wire connection problems, should be checked before even thinking of the computer.
