Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 88 Buick Regal Stalling Problem, electronic engine control, alternator belt

Question
I recently purchased a 88 Buick Regal with a 2.8L. engine.  Initially the car ran fine but shortly after, the engine started cutting out and stalling upon warming up.  The problem quickly progressed to sputtering and dying shortly after starting.  Before worsening, and before warming, the alternator would become quite hot. I removed the alternator belt and the engine ran fine, but upon replacing the belt, the same problem immediately manifested itself.  Early in the attempt to correct, I replaced the electronic engine control module (with used from auto wrecker)without any change.  Upon finding that taking the alternator off line corrected the problem, I replaced the alternator but did not behave any differently. I am stuck -- any suggestions will be most welcome.

Answer
Hello Jim,
The hot alternator may just be because it is working, which places a heavy load on the engine. The load could cause an engine that would run without a load, to be working harder than the fuel supply will handle.
I would check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail, and see if it stays above 14 PSI.
May just be a dirty filter.
