Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: rod bearings....HELP!?!?, oldsmobile delta 88, rod bearings

Question
HI THERE,
ok...so here's my problem. my uncle and also a friend of the family both told me my "rod bearing's" blown,or  a piston is 'slapping'.another person agreed about the rod bearing so i'll try replacing that first.
he told me i should replace my car or engine so i asked someone else and they said i could replace my rod bearings if i knew how to do it and wouldn't cost but around a few dollars. not $1000 like a new motor would!
so my question is----
CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE ME A DETAILED INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO GO ABOUT REPLACING/CHECKING MY ROD BEARINGS WITH OR WITHOUT THE USE OF A CHERRY PICKER(PREFERABLY WITHOUT ONE).
MY CAR IS AN 1986 Oldsmobile Delta 88 royale, with a 3.8 liter V6, front wheel drive tranny.
hopefully asking you will be the best thing i've done...i asked another expert 2 years ago on this website and he helped me emensaly with my lighting questions.

hope to hear from you soon....if you need any more info please let me know. @ greystone316316@hotmail.com......or kitty53_43@hotmail.com and i'll give you any info you need about the car so we can get it road worthy again.
thank you,
joey

Answer
Hi Joey,
If the rod bearings a knocking, it may not be possible to just replace them.
But looking, and measuring the crankshaft with a micrometer, is the only way to know.
The rod bearings are accessed from the bottom of the engine, and I seriously doubt that the pan can be dropped while in the frame, like they could years ago.
What I suggest is to go to a bookstore, or a good sized parts store, and get a manual for that car.
The public library, refference section, has a large selection of manuals you can look at.

If you have a large high school, or a vocational tech school in the area, they often do that type of work for training. You buy parts.

Good luck,
Van
