Plymouth Repair: 1997 Plymouth Voyager, plymouth voyager, voyager 3

Question
3.3L engine / short drive train

Howdy from Texas!
I am getting an error code that refers to Chrysler reference C064
It says possible problems are: open or shorted LDP (leak detection pump) switch sense circuit, LDP switch failure, open fused ignition switch output or vac. supply problem (please, no).
My mechanic printed out the Chrysler C064 spec (not very detailed) and we think we located the LDP but he says the guy at the dealership told him "you'd rather birth a baby" than change the thing. He thinks it looks like you'd have to take the wheel wall out (which we did to change out my radio cable) to get to it but he's never changed one before. Is my only option to take it to the dealership (horrid!) or is it something that my mechanic COUILD get to with instructions? I am a poor school teacher and my wallet cringes at the thought of letting a dealership get their hands on it. I have 100,000 miles on this van and I'd like it to last as long as possible!
Thanks for your time.
