Plymouth Repair: transaxle repair, plymouth voyager, axile

Question
I have a 92 Plymouth Voyager van.  It has 145,000 miles on it.  I bought it for $500.  I recently felt a "clunking" noise when I slow down or take off. I have not taken it in to be seen professionally.  I have been told by one friend that it needs engine mounts and another, the transaxle is broken.  I think it is the transaxle.  I am a single mom and don't have a lot of money.  How much should this repair cost and how do I know if I am being ripped off?  I believe I can find someone on the side to fix it, but don't know what price I should expect.  Also, I plan to buy a newer used car in the spring when my income tax comes in.  Is this repair worth the cost?  Is there any way I can get away with the least amount of money until spring?  thank you for your help.
