Pontiac Repair: Air Conditioning Compressor, pontiac grand prix, air conditioning compressor

Question
So today i went and got my oil changed at a speedee i have a 99 Pontiac grand Prix and i had gone there before cause i can get a cheap oil change and they had told me that my air conditioning compressor was going bad and that was the noise i was hearing for a long time not just my power steering pump. I just figured my air conditioning wouldn't work anymore it wouldn't be fun living in the south but i could live cause it was about a $500 job =(

THEN when i went there today they were saying that if i didn't replace it not only would my air conditioning go out but also something about a serpentine belt freezing up so in the end my car wont work. Is this true? My car has been amazing for me so far and i got it used it almost has 200,000 miles on it and i need it to last! What should i do?

Answer
Hi Brenna:

If indeed the a/c compressor is the noise then yes they are right eventually it may sieze up and then you could loose the serpantine belt. the question is this how loud is it and how long untill it happens? answer I don't know it could be a week or a year it's an unknown. It's not a scare tatict it's a real possablility but how long untill it happens? to be honest with you $500.00 to replace an A?C compressor is a cheap price. A?C compressors are expensive I would shop around and see what you can get it down for I wouldn't go for the chpest price either you get what you pay for aftermarket parts are CHEAP and usually don't last! good luck :)
