Pontiac Repair: P0440 and brake/anti lock light on, pontiac bonneville, purge valve

Question
QUESTION: 2002 Pontiac Bonneville SE V6
Got a P0440 code and it has to do with a faulty purge valve. Want to know how to check to see if that's the problem?
Also the brake light and anti lock light have been on for some time. What could be the cause of that?

ANSWER: Hey Shawn:

usually a 440 code is set due to a faulty gas cap of a vent valve. It's not real common for a purge valve to go bad on these They do but not that common. You need a true scan tool to figure out what the issue is to command on the evap system to purge and see what the issue may be. Also on those older ones the gas tank filler pipes rot out on the top and they tear/damage the seal on the gas cap. Usually they will only set a po442 though. Unless the rot is really bad and it really damaged the cap. as for the ABS with out knowing what code is set I can't tell you what is wrong. have the car scanned for codes at one of the big box auto parts stores for codes they do it for free. Good luck :-}

QUESTION: Got it scanned yesterday and got a P0128 along with the p0440. But nothing that had to do with the ABS. Does that seem odd?
Also while i mentioned it, what might be the most likely issue causing the p0128? Checked the coolant level and it was just fine.

Answer
99% of the time it's due to a bad thermostat.
in some cases because the engine and trasnmission are tied into the traction control/stability systems in some cases a service engine soon lamp can also turn on a trac off abs etc.. You may want to amke sure that the brake fluid level is okay as well. a low fluid l;evel can turn on the abs lamp as well as the red warning lamp. also make sure the parking breake is all the way off.
