Pontiac Repair: Engine Light, spark plug wire, pontiac grand prix

Question
I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix SE V6 3.1L SFI OHV 6CYL.
My check engine light just came on and it's flashing. I take it ot Auto Zone and had it scan, it tell me I had the code (P.O.301 Misfirer) Cyl-1. Do that means I need a Catalytic Converter?

Answer
Hi Alicia:

That code is for a misfire on engine cylinder #1 meaning that the engine is only running on 5 of the 6 cylinders. It can be a bunch of things causing this the most common thing would be a bad spark plug wire but it could be a bad spark plug or a plugged fuel injector or worse some sort of a mechanical issue with the engine. with out seeing It I can't tell you for sure what the issue is. If you continue to drive it with the light flashing it will eventually damage the catalitic converter. if it just started dooing it your probably okay with the converter. Do not ignore it else wise the repair will be more expensive in the long run. good luck :)
