Pontiac Repair: Jumpy Speedometer in 97 Sunfire, speedometer needle, pontiac sunfire

Question
I have a 97' Pontiac Sunfire with a 2.2L 4cyl, 5-spd manual.

The speedometer needle recently started jumping. This is an intermittent problem: sometimes it's fine, sometimes it jumps a little, other times it jumps erratically and continuously.

The needle only jumps upward from my actual speed and it only happens when the car is moving. The rest of the cluster gauges work fine.

Electrical? Sensor? I'm used to cables so where do I start?

Answer
Hi scott:

well in order to tell for sure you would need to drive this car with a true scan tool and see what the VSS is reading in comparison to the speedo if the speedo is juming and the VSS is jumpy as well then I would look at the VSS sensor in the transmission. if the VSS is not jumpy then the speedo it's self is the issue.
