Pontiac Repair: 2000 alero no power to dash, olds alero, fuse boxes

Question
Ok I am working on a 2000 olds alero 2.4 automatic. The problem i am having is that there seems to be no power going to the instrument cluster the speedo and tach are maxxed out. the odometer doesnt light up. when the key is turned on the only thing that happens on the dash is the check engine light illuminates and the background lights come on.Other than no gauges everything else seems to work fine. signals headlights radio etc. The car runs fine also. I used a meter and checked every fuse in all 3 fuse boxes pulled out cluster and checked connector, removed glove box and wiggled connectors at the computer. Any ideas? Thanks John.

Answer
Hi John:

all the gages on the speedo are run by a data line. if everything else on the car works fine and there are no warning lamps comming on I would lean towards a bad speedo assembly. BUT I would have the car scanned for codes and see what communication codes are stored in other modules to be on the safe side. On common thing on these cars especially if it has a sun roof is the left fues panel would fill up with corrosion and the data line between the modules goes though the left fuse block. and the issue could be there. good luck :)
