Pontiac Repair: 1996 Pontiac Sunbird 2.4 auto, crank shaft position sensor, pontiac sunbird

Question
Vehicle always starts BUT once it is warm - problems. If I start and drive we're good; then if i stop, turn off the car, and come back out WON'T START! Wait 30 minutes, fires right up - may quit again a block away or won't happen for 3 months!! Very irratic - new fuel pump, filter, relay, cam shaft sensor (haven't replaced ignition module or MAP) - is it a wiring issue? grounding issue? I love the car but can't trust it - mechanics can't figure out because there's no one thing that triggers it - does not run funny or make any sounds when this happens - no engine light.

Answer
Hi Laura:

Well when it will not start it needs to be checked for a few things fuel pump pressure and spark at the plugs. It's missing one of those things. should be easy to fix once someone can get it to act up and get some test equipment on it to check for those things. If I were to guess I would "guess" at a crank shaft position sensor but untill you see what is missing it's hard to say. it has gotta be something to do with heat. electronics and heat don't mix so what ever is acting up here once it cools down it starts and runs. I would also want to look at the igniton switch. when thsi will not start is that any of the accy's in the car that will not run either like blower motor power windows etc.. if so that could be a clue. back to your question a Map wouldn't cause this but a ICM could BUT the ICM needs the crank siganl into it in forder to start things in motion for it to run.  Good luck :-}
