Pontiac Repair: 97 Pontiac Gtp electrical problem, pontiac gtp, fuse boxes

Question
QUESTION: Hi there,
I have a 97 gtp that just recently the battery started to die every day. Replaced the battery and it still does it. I found out that when I turn the car off and lock the doors the two lights on the floor board under the dash, and the lights on the inside of the doors stay on all the time. Also when I turn the dimmer switch on the two roof dome lights are really dim. I unhooked the alarm, unhooked the amp for the stereo, and unhooked all the inside lights and the battery still dies. Also when I am driving the radio will turn off for 5 seconds and then turn back on. And when it turns off the windows will not work until the radio is back on. The aftermarket alarm and amp have been on the car for over 2 years.
Do you think it might be a bad ground somewhere or a bad ignition switch?

Thanks
Rusty

ANSWER: Hi Rusty:
I think you have a few issues here. the windows and radio are related and I would have to say a power feed or a ground for sure. More likley a power feed. when this is acting up use a 12 volt test light and check the fuses in the fuse boxes for battery volatge the test light should be bright on all fuses if not you have a bad power feed to the ignition switch or the switch it's self is bad. the pass through in the fire wall under the glove box is a likley source for a bad power feed there is a rubber boot that the harness runs through and that boot hold in watre and causes the wire to corrode. As for the interior lmps staying on. do they stay on untill the battery dies or do they eventually time out and go out? if they eventually do time out then I would suspect a bad door jam switch or a switch in one of the door locks. if they do not turn off at all ever I would look at a Body control module concern or a inavertant power control relay issue.

QUESTION: Ok checked the fuse box. With the key on all the fuses have the same power. With the key off and doors closed I have 12 fuses that have power all the time and all the fuses are in the same 3 rows up and down.

ANSWER: I'm thinking you have a Body control module issue here then a power issue. The body control module on that car is not real easy to diagnose. You need a service manual a,d fid the symptom that closly matches what you have going on. and see if the have the proper input to the BCM. the BCM is on the left side of the dash by the parking brake. stay away from Haynes Manuals. gte either a Chilton or Motor manual.

QUESTION: I replaced the bcm and I have the same issue. I still have power to the fuses with the key off. What should I look at next

Answer
Like I said in My lat reply you need a service manual for this car and you need to find a symptom that is closest to what you have going on here and check the input to the BCM. A NCM is a simple computer and works just like one Garbage in garbage out. if it's getting the wrong input it going to send out the wront output. I would check your battery volatge input to the BCM both swiched ignition and constant battery voltage. the ground(S) and the door lock and door jam inputs. My feeling is the BCM is maybe keeping the RAP relay turned on???
