Land Rover Repair: 99 range rover 4.0 se, electronic tester, proper diagnosis

i have a 99 range rover 4.0 se and the problem is that my tarnsmission is stuck in 3rd gear. some have told me that my transmission is going out and others have told me that its the ECM. if it is the ECM how can i reset it as there are no range mechanics in town.

The only way to tell is your problem is electronic or mechanical will be to find a dealer or a shop with an Autologic or Rovacomm test system to interrogate the transmission computer.

You can check for burnt fluid, a sign of gearbox failure, and you can remove the pan and check for chunks but the electronic tester is really necessary for proper diagnosis.
