Pontiac Repair: 1999 Firebird RPMs, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
I have a 1999 V6 Firebird. When I am driving at 55 mph, the RPMs fluctuate between 1600 and 1700. it starts at 1600 and spikes to 1700 for one second then back down to 1600 for two seconds and then repeat over and over again until I speed up or slow down. it also does not matter if I am using the cruise control or the gas pedal to maintain speed. It also does the same thing at other speeds and RPMs. I just used 55mph as the speed I tested it at.

Answer
Hi Raymond:
try taking the Mass air flow sensor out and cleaning it. there is a product made by a company CRC called Mass air flow sensor cleaner. follow the directions on the can and see if it still does it. I'll assume there is no service engine soon lamp on because you didn't mention one being on so more then lilley there is no codes set which makes it hard to find the issue if there are no codes present. I'll also assume that it has not aftermarket parts in it like a fits all PCV valve and it's not misfiring under a load. doe this happen more so whenit's wet or damp out out in the AM's ?
