Pontiac Repair: broken off bolts where exhaust connects to manifold on a 1992 pontiac sunbird 3.1 V6, pontiac sunbird, 1992 pontiac sunbird

Question
QUESTION: The donut needed to be replaced and when the bolts were being taken out they snapped off. I had a friend put a bracket on to hold the exhaust up but it is not connected to the manifold.  what is involved in getting those bolts out. What parts have to be removed and what tools would I require.  Also since this has happened when my car heats up to operating tempature it drives fine but if I turn it off it will not start again until the car cools off, aproximately 1 to 2 hours. Could this have to do with the exhaust blowing into the engine compartment.  The alternator has been tested and is fine as well as the battery.  Someone has said that it could have something to do with soot building up in the engine compartment.  I hope I have worded this all correctly as I am not much of a mechanic, being a girl and all, lol.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Hi Teresa:

in order to fix it correct;y the rear exhaust manifold needs t come off the engine and the broken bolts removed. It's hard to get them out with the manifold attached to the engine still in the car. As for the no start issue did that happen after the exhaust leak issue or was it ther prior to this happening?  A heat built up in the engine compartment is possable but I doubt it. Electronics and excessive heat do not get along well. What happens when it will not start does it crank and not start or will it not crank at all when it will not start? it depends on which way you look at the issue.. Good luck :-}

QUESTION: in answer to your response the car does try to start it turns over and then goes dead.  If it cools off enough it can be jump started.  I have found that it has to cool for awhile and then it will jump start and if left alone long enough it just starts on its own. Any ideas.  Also I was wondering how difficult it is to remove the rear exhaust manifold and if there are any tricks to make the job easier.  As I have limited money I have a friend that is going to do it for me so any hints to make the job easier would be appreciated.  Thank you for your quick response.

ANSWER: the manifold job is pretty straight forward it's jst  a limited space issue to get in ther to remove it. as for the starting if it cranks why do you try to jump start it? does it crank over slowly? If it cranks fine ther should be no reason to jump start it. Has the battry died on this recently? if so there is an idle learn proceedure that has to be done on this engine or it will dile erraticly and or will stall that could be it.

QUESTION: thanks so much for your help.  In answer to your response the motor turn and then kinda clunks. It only turns once and clunks and continues to do that until I let it cools off. Yes I had a problem with the top battery positive battery post touching the hood of the car and it was causing it to arc.  I put a cap on it and it ran fine after the battery charged up.  This new thing of not starting after the motor warms up did not start happening untill the exhaust problem happened.  Any ideas???

Answer
It could be heat related like I said electrical parts and heat don't get a long. You could have an issue with the starter motor when it heats up or high resistance in one or both of the battery cables. once it cools down the resistance drops and you have more amererage flowing to the motor from the battery. The fact that it makes a clunking noise would lead me to belive it's from the starter motor it's self.
