Pontiac Repair: shift cylenoid, solenoid, steering column

Question
My 2002 Montana will not shift into overdrive, been told it's one of the cylenoids but noone can tell me where it's located. Some say in transmission, and others say it's in steering column, please help.

Answer
Hey Bobby:

Well it can be a lot of things the easiest thing for it to be would be a shift solenoid but I doubt it. the shift solenoid for 4'th gear is also used in Reverse and 1'st gear so I don't think that is what's wrong here I think you have something deeper inthe transmission that is bad. This is not a job for the do it your selfer by any means the shift solenoid could be and you only have to take the trnasmission side cover off to get top the solenoid but like I said there is soemthing else going in in there. has any service engine soon lamp come on? How does the transmission fluid look? It if look brown and had a nasty burnt smell to it the transmission is going to have to com out to be repaired. good luck :)
