Pontiac Repair: 99 sunfire gas gauge problem, gas gauge, haynes manual

Question
Hello,

My gas gauge just stoped working. When you put gas in the car, it goes up but, comes down slow. I have the haynes manual for the car and thought maybe it was a short. Tested the gauge at the cluster and it was good. So im leaning towards a bad ground. Is the ground located on the body somewhere or subframe? any help you could give me would be great,

Thanks

Answer
Hi Matthew:

90% of the time the issue is inside the gas tank. The fuel levek sensor on the fuel pump module is what the issue is. If you had a bad ground depending on the year of the car the gauge would real full or empty all the time. It wouldn't be erratic like you stated which leads me to think yours is just like all the rest of the cars with a gauge issue the level sensor is bad. The additives in the fuel distroy the sensor. High sulfer content in the gas contributes to the problem. Good luck :)
