Pontiac Repair: EBCM, variable effort, wheel position

Hi Tim....kind of a 2 part quest. display came up on my 2004 GTP that read"service variable effort steering" Mechanic figured figured it was the ebcm and would cost $2000. Canadian to fix it....is this accurate?and how long can I go before fixing it?   thx T.

it is possible that it is the EBCM, without knowing what code it set its hard to diagnois, but the variable effort steering has three componants, 1, a steering wheel position sensor, 2 electronics inside the steering gear, and 3 the ebcm, which monitors and controls the system.  Can you find out what code it set?  thanks, Tim
