Pontiac Repair: fuel delivery?, grand am gt, gas tanks

Question
Have a '01 Grand Am GT.  Started and ran fine to library.  Then wouldn't start.  Starts with starting fluid but won't stay running.  Suggestions?

Answer
Hi Denise:

Well it one of 2 things does the security lamp come on and start flashing? If so the teft system has a fault in it and it's cutting the fuel delivery out. VERY common on these cars. 9 out of 10 times it's the ignition lock cylinder that fails there is a sensor in the lock cylinder housing that goes bad. @'nd it could just be a bad fuel pump. If the security lamp is not flashing the try cranking the car while some one taps on the bottom of the gas tanks with a ruber mallet that will "jar" the pump and a lot of time get it running. If that does it the pump is bad and needs to be replaced. If indeed it's the pump have the fuel filter replaced as well. Good luck :)
