Pontiac Repair: 96 formula, stalls, now wont run, firebird formula, noid light

Question
i have a 96 firebird formula, 5.7l lt1 auto.
the engine stalled without warning and would not start back 'til the next day. later i tried to drive it to work, it stalled, and hasn't started back since. there is no warning, rhym or reason to it.(hot, cold, idle, accel..) the fuel pump is less than 2 yrs old, and is humming properly. no trouble codes could be found using "pro scan". what could this be?

Answer
Hi David:

well in order for this to run it needs fuel and spark. you need to see which one your missing. My guess is spark. tht engine was noted for ignition system issues. either a bad coil or worse a bad distributor assembly. that engine has what is called an opti-spark system. it was on on that engine and the experiment with it failed in my mind. the ditributor is loated behind the water pump on the dront of the engine. If the water pump failed which they did regularly they filled the distributor up with water and coolant and then they need a distributor. Ususally when these distributors fail they don't set codes they just fail all together.. I'm not saying that's what happened here but it sounds that way. once you know what your missing as to why it will not run you can look for the root cause of the failure. You need a spark checker to check for spark at the plugs and at the coil and a "noid" light to see if you have injector pulse.
Good luck :)
